Google AI Mode Is Citing Google More Than Anyone Else — Here’s What That Means

Google’s AI Mode Is Citing Google More Than Anyone Else, Here’s What That Means

If you’ve been exploring Google’s AI Mode, you might have noticed something surprising: Google is increasingly citing itself. A recent study from SE Ranking shows that nearly one in five sources in AI answers now comes directly from Google.com, often sending users back to more Google searches instead of external sites.

Why This Matters

AI search is supposed to highlight the best sources across the web, helping users discover valuable information. But if Google keeps citing itself, there are two big implications:

  1. Fewer direct links to external sites – This could mean less traffic for businesses, content creators, and publishers.

  2. More users staying inside Google – Every click keeps people on Google surfaces, where ads, reviews, and monetized content dominate.

The Numbers Speak

SE Ranking analyzed over 1.3 million AI Mode citations across 68,313 keywords in 20 industries. The results are striking:

  • Google.com alone accounted for 17.42% of all citations — more than YouTube, Facebook, Reddit, Amazon, Indeed, and Zillow combined.

  • Including other Google-owned properties like YouTube, Google now controls roughly 20% of AI Mode sources.

  • Back in June 2025, Google was cited in just 5.7% of AI answers — a trend that has nearly tripled in less than a year.

How Google Is Self-Preferencing

Previously, AI Mode mainly linked to Google Business Profiles. Now the landscape has shifted:

  • 59% of Google citations link to traditional search results.

  • 36.1% still reference Business Profiles.

  • Smaller shares point to Google Support (1.7%), Google Flights (0.1%), and other properties.

Many citations even display a mini search results panel alongside the AI answer, effectively turning the citation itself into another search experience.

Industry Differences

Google’s self-preferencing isn’t uniform — some industries see it more than others:

  • Travel: 53.18% of citations

  • Entertainment & hobbies: 48.74%

  • Real estate: 30.54%

  • Careers & jobs: The only sector where Indeed outpaces Google (3.1x more citations)

What This Means for Businesses and Users

For content creators and marketers, this trend signals a shift in the SEO landscape. With AI Mode sending users deeper into Google’s ecosystem, organic traffic from AI citations may be harder to capture.

For users, it’s a more streamlined experience — but one that keeps you inside Google’s universe, nudging you toward additional searches, Maps, Reviews, and other Google-controlled content.

The Takeaway

Google’s AI Mode isn’t just surfacing information — it’s steering users where to go next. As Google cites itself more and more, businesses must rethink how they drive traffic and maintain visibility, while users encounter a web increasingly filtered through Google’s lens, notes Vertex Web Agency.
